Hey everyone, my name is Jason Bowman and I am the newest contributor to Big Hearted Gamers. I am very excited to have this opportunity to help shine a light on the good side of gaming. I’m looking forward to bringing profiles on special people, great organizations and events that do great services through video games. As Peench and Lou have both stated, the video game industry doesn’t always have the greatest reputation to the general public. We get demonized when unfortunate events occur, we get made fun of and get odd looks when people find out grown adults still play video games.
I’ve always been intrigued by non-profit work and organizations who do so much for their communities. I had a 12 week internship before with The Arc in my local town and the amount of time, effort and heart people put into giving to others is amazing. I’m really hoping I can help shine a light on some amazing people, great causes and some events that might be local to you that you can give back and help make someone’s day or even life, better.
Quick rundown about me. I live in the heart of Michigan, born and raised and I am 30 years old. My wife, Michaela and I are expecting our first child (boy!) in February and are very excited. In fact, our getting pregnant has helped pushed me to do this. I want to show my child the good side of video games. I don’t want him to just be a child who games and is inactive and gets sucked into the negative, I want him to be involved and understand how ratings work, why parental controls exist, why he can’t play Halo with me until he is older and for him to understand and appreciate why people want to do good things for those less fortunate.
I have been a lifelong gamer. My dad bought the original Atari back in the day and I grew up playing Mario on the NES. I’m an avid sports nut (Fire Up Chips!), enjoy photography, music, golf and more. I am a computer technician by day for two different school districts in the area, both of which have some amazing teachers and staff in them and I am very fortunate to work along side them. My favorite video game franchise is Halo and Halo 5 has been fantastic so far. All time favorite game is probably Mario Kart for the SNES, not that N64 stuff, the ORIGINAL.
